20 Years ECC Cyprus
As the ECC Network (ECC-Net) marks its 20th anniversary, each ECC shares unforgettable moments, taking us on a journey through the local initiatives they have undertaken over the years. Here, ECC Cyprus presents its highlights over the past 20 years
Celebrating the 20th anniversary of the ECC Network
In May 2025, ECC Cyprus celebrated the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the Network of European Consumer Centres, featuring addresses by the Head of the Representation of the European Commission in Cyprus, and the Director General of the Ministry of Energy, Trade, and Industry. The celebration received media coverage, showcasing the collaborative efforts within the consumer protection landscape in Europe. This event was attended by representatives from the European Commission in Cyprus, consumer organisations, and notable airlines such as Cyprus Airways, TUS Airlines, and Aegean Airlines. It also brought together trade unions, the Enterprise Europe Network, Solvit, Europe Direct, Safe Gate, and the Consumer Protection Cooperation Network.
Passenger rights campaign at Larnaca Airport
In a notable step to empower travelers and promote transparency in air travel, a comprehensive Passenger Rights Awareness Campaign was launched at Larnaca International Airport. This initiative aimed at informing passengers of their rights in the event of flight delays, cancellations, denied boarding, and baggage issues, in accordance with the rules on passenger rights as specified in EU Regulation EC 261/2004.
By proactively raising awareness, the campaign seeks to reduce the confusion and frustration travelers often face during disruptions. Passengers are encouraged to know their entitlements, including compensation, care, and assistance provisions that airlines are legally obligated to provide.
Informing consumers about European Networks
An exhibition entitled 'Get Connected' was held at the Mall of Cyprus, aiming to inform citizens about all European Networks in Cyprus. (3/2020). The exhibition was organised by Europe Direct and the Representation of European Commission in Cyprus. A great opportunity for the consumers to know about all European Networks and their benefits.
Speaking at the 29th Pancyprian Informative Seminar
In the spirit of public education, ECC Cyprus took part in the 29th Pancyprian Informative Seminar of SEK, where it presented its services and activities to a wide audience of union representatives, public officials, and members of civil society. The seminar provided an opportunity for ECC Cyprus to highlight its role in assisting consumers with cross-border disputes, especially those related to transport, e-commerce, and digital services.
By this active participation in national forums like the SEK seminar, ECC Cyprus reaffirms its commitment to protecting and empowering consumers, not only when they travel but also in their everyday interactions across the European Single Market.
Joint project: hotel classifications in the EU
In 2008, during the Cooperation Day held in Paris, ECC Cyprus has undertaken the coordination of a joint project titled “Classification of Hotel Establishments within the EU., which was produced in 2009.
The working group for this initiative included representatives from ECC Belgium, ECC Bulgaria, ECC Greece, ECC Latvia, ECC Poland, ECC Romania, and ECC Spain.
ECC Cyprus developed a questionnaire in collaboration with the Cyprus Tourism Organisation, the Cyprus Hoteliers Association, and the Association of Cyprus Tourist Enterprises. After receiving initial feedback from the working group, the questionnaire was distributed to all ECCs for broader input.
The report includes useful information on the existing classification systems of the hotel establishments within the EU, the variations in each system, contact points for information/complaints in each country and the problems encountered by consumers in choosing the hotel establishment that satisfies their expectations. It also provides helpful information regarding facilities for people with disabilities. The survey indicates that classification systems already exist at a national and regional level in most Member States. Based on the findings of the project, setting up a European hotel classification scheme may be considered an unfeasible and ill-founded task, which is still relevant.
