State of the Union: Our Democracy in Action
On 13 September 2023, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen will deliver the State of the European Union (SOTEU) to the European Parliament. Von der Leyen will give insights into our recent past and achievements. She will also talk about the important issues Europeans face and present ideas for solving these issues. This includes suggestions for new European laws and policies.
Take stock of what we achieved
The State of the Union is a window offering insights into our recent past and the achievements of the past year. In the field of consumer protection, we highlight some important successes:
- Responding to the energy prices: The principle of solidarity has been central to the EU’s response to the energy crisis. Default solidarity arrangements have been established and measures have been taken to protect consumers from high energy prices.
- 30th anniversary of the Single Market: in 2023, the EU celebrates the 30th anniversary of its single market of European integration, which is considered the foundation of the EU’s enduring competitiveness.
- Right to repair proposal: The Commission introduced new consumer rights that will make repairing goods easier and more attractive. It also proposes common criteria to combat greenwashing and misleading environmental claims.
- Digital Services Act: The Commission launched the European Centre for Algorithmic Transparency to help enforce the Digital Services Act.
- New Cyber Resilience Act: The Commission presents a proposal for a new Cyber Resilience Act to protect consumers and businesses from products with inadequate security features.
Looking ahead to Europe in action: shaping our future together
Von der Leyen will look ahead to priorities and actions for the following year. The President also sets out how the Commission will address the most pressing challenges the European Union faces and ideas for shaping the future of the EU.
